Provides advanced learning in Sanskrit language, literature, classical texts and Indian intellectual traditions, encouraging textual analysis, interpretation, research and cultural awareness.
Learning Objectives
Vedic & Upanishadic Studies
Study the Rigveda Samhita, Taittiriya Upanishad and the Vedic commentarial tradition through the paper “वेद एवं उपनिषद्” (Veda & Upanishad).
Classical Language & Linguistics
Examine Pali-Prakrit literary collections alongside phonetics, semantics and language classification through “पालि-प्राकृत संग्रह एवं भाषाशास्त्र”.
Indian Philosophical Systems
Engage with Vedanta, Nyaya (तर्कभाषा) and Sankhya (सांख्यकारिका) through the core texts of “भारतीय दर्शन” (Indian Philosophy).
Poetics, Grammar & Composition
Master classical poetics and Paninian grammar through “काव्यशास्त्र एवं व्याकरण” and Sanskrit essay-writing through “व्याकरण और निबन्ध”.
Learning Outcomes
Sanskrit Literary & Political History
Trace the history of classical Sanskrit literature (Ramayana, Mahabharata, Puranas, Mahakavya, drama) alongside the political and cultural history of ancient India.
Advanced Grammar & Composition
Apply Bhattoji Dikshit’s Siddhanta Kaumudi (Karaka Prakaran) and Patanjali’s Mahabhashya to advanced Sanskrit essay composition.
Vedic Language, Ritual & Exegesis
Elective study of the Rigveda Samhita and Aitareya Brahmana, Vedic grammar, or Vedic etymology, Paribhasha and Mahabhashya.
Indian Logic & Metaphysics
Elective study of Nyaya-Vaisheshika through the Gautama Nyaya Sutra, Prashastapada Bhashya and Vishwanatha’s Siddhanta Muktavali.
Poetics, Aesthetics & Dramaturgy
Elective study of Alankara-shastra through Kavyaprakasha, Dhvanyaloka and Vakroktijivitam, or classical dramaturgy through Dasharupaka and Mrichchhakatika.
Philosophy, Yoga & Buddhist Thought
Elective study of Yajurveda Samhita, Brahmana and Mimamsa, or Yoga, Agama and Buddhist philosophy (Patanjali Yogashastra, Madhyamaka Karika).

Elective IV: यजुर्वेदसंहिता-ब्राह्मण-मीमांसा/Yajurveda Samhita-Brahmana-Mimamsa, व्याकरण/Grammar, योग-आगम-बौद्ध दर्शन/Yoga-Agama-Buddhist Philosophy, नाट्यशास्त्र/Natyashastra. Elective V: वैदिक निर्वचन/Vedic Nirvachan (etymology), परिभाषा-महाभाष्य/Paribhasha-Mahabhashya, वेदान्त-मीमांसा/Vedanta-Mimamsa, काव्य/Kavya (poetry). Viva-Voce (मौखिकी) is evaluated for 100 marks; the syllabus table lists no separate credit value for it.
The M.A. Sanskrit syllabus follows an annual (First Year / Second Year) examination scheme rather than the four-semester NEP 2020 pattern used by other postgraduate programmes at the College.
