Develops advanced knowledge of Urdu language and literature through literary study, critical interpretation, communication and research-oriented learning.
Learning Objectives
Classical & Modern Prose
Study of non-fiction Urdu prose — essays, letters, sketches (khaka) and travelogues (safarnama) — tracing the tradition of Urdu non-fictional writing.
Poetic Traditions
In-depth study of Urdu poetic genres — Nazm, Ghazal, Qasida, Marsiya and Masnavi — spanning classical and modern poets.
Fiction & Drama
Evolution of Urdu fiction from Dastan to Novel, Afsana (short story) and Drama, including works of Premchand, Krishan Chandar and Manto.
Literary History & Criticism
Grounding in the history of Urdu language and literature since 1857, alongside the principles and practice of Urdu literary criticism (Tanqeed).
Learning Outcomes
Command of Major Literary Forms
Ability to analyse and interpret the major genres of Urdu literature — poetry, fiction, drama and non-fiction prose.
Specialised Author Study
Focused study of one major Urdu literary figure — Sir Syed, Shibli, Ghalib, Premchand or Iqbal — chosen under the optional Paper IV.
Persian Language Proficiency
Working knowledge of Persian language, prose, poetry and grammar as a foundational language for Urdu literary studies (Paper V, M.A. Previous).
Oral & Research Communication
Ability to present and orally defend independent literary knowledge and interpretation through the compulsory Viva-Voce examination.
Critical & Comparative Analysis
Skills in comparative analysis of Urdu literary movements — from the tradition of 1857 to the Progressive (Taraqqi Pasand) and Modernist (Jadeed) movements.
Credit-Wise Distribution
This is an older, non-CBCS annual/paper scheme as per the V.B.S. Purvanchal University syllabus — papers are assessed in Marks (out of 100), not credits.
