About the Programme

Provides advanced understanding of physical principles, mathematical methods and scientific phenomena, with emphasis on analytical reasoning, experimentation and research skills.

Learning Objectives

Mathematical & Computational Physics

Master complex variables, special functions, Fourier & Laplace transforms and numerical techniques such as Runge-Kutta methods using MATLAB.

Classical & Quantum Mechanics

Build a rigorous foundation in Lagrangian-Hamiltonian dynamics, canonical transformations, and the postulates, linear vector spaces and angular momentum theory of Quantum Mechanics.

Nuclear, Atomic & Condensed Matter Physics

Study nuclear models and forces, atomic/molecular spectra, and the crystal structure, binding and thermal properties of condensed matter.

Electronics & Instrumentation

Gain hands-on training in power devices, operational amplifiers and digital logic design through dedicated Physics and Electronics laboratories.

Learning Outcomes

Laser, Optics & Photonics

Understand laser theory, holography, non-linear optics, fibre optics and liquid crystal physics used in photonics and communication.

Electromagnetic Theory & Plasma Physics

Apply Maxwell's equations, wave propagation in dielectrics and metals, and magneto-plasma phenomena to real physical systems.

Advanced Electronics & Microprocessors

Design sequential logic circuits and memory systems, and program the Intel 8085 microprocessor in assembly language.

Relativistic Electrodynamics & Condensed Matter

Command the four-dimensional relativistic formulation of electrodynamics along with the dielectric, magnetic, optical and superconducting (BCS theory) properties of solids.

Specialised Electives

Pursue elective specialisation in Atmospheric & Space Physics or Physics of Renewable Energies, covering solar, wind, hydrogen and geothermal energy technologies.

Independent Research

Carry out an independent Research Project cum Dissertation across all four semesters, culminating in a viva-voce defence of original work.
